Key Facts
What's This Big Idea?
Pelagianism is like a special way of thinking about being good. A long, long time ago, a wise man named Pelagius thought people were born pretty good already. He believed that everyone has the power inside them to choose to do good things and follow all the rules, like a superhero with amazing self-control.
He thought God wouldn't ask us to do things that are impossible, so it must be possible to be perfect!
Who Was Pelagius?
Pelagius was a thoughtful person who lived a very long time ago, maybe even before your grandparents' grandparents were born! He came from a place called the British Isles. He was like a teacher who believed in helping people be their best. He thought it wasn't fair to blame babies for things they didn't do, so he believed babies were born without any mistakes.
Why Did People Disagree?
Not everyone agreed with Pelagius! Another very important person named Augustine thought that people needed a special kind of help, like a superpower from God, to be truly good. Augustine believed that everyone made mistakes, and it was hard to be perfect without that help. They had big arguments about how people could be good and if they needed God's help to do it.
Did Pelagianism Win?
In the end, most of the important church leaders decided that Pelagius's ideas were not quite right. They said his way of thinking was a mistake, or 'heresy.' So, for a long time, people who believed in Pelagianism weren't allowed to share their ideas. But today, some people wonder if Pelagius's ideas were really that different from what many people think now!
