Novgorod Republic: A Land of Mighty Merchants!

Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a super-duper powerful place in what is now Russia called the Novgorod Republic. It wasn't a kingdom with a king, but more like a big city that ruled over lots of land. The Novgorod Republic started way back, around the year 1136. That's older than your grandparents' grandparents! It lasted for a super long time, for hundreds of years, until it was finally taken over by another powerful leader in 1478. So, it was like a really, really long school year, but way more exciting!

Novgorod was famous for its super smart and rich merchants! These were people who were amazing at trading goods like furs, honey, and wax. They had a special bell, called the Veche bell, that they rang to call everyone together to vote on important stuff. It was like a giant town meeting where everyone had a say!

The merchants of Novgorod were like the superheroes of trade. They traveled far and wide, even to places like England and Germany, to swap their goods. They were so good at it that Novgorod became one of the richest and most important trading cities in all of Eastern Europe. They even had their own special coins!
