Welcome to the Arctic Islands!

Novaya Zemlya is a super cool place made of two big islands way up north in the Arctic Ocean. It's so far north that it's considered the very edge of Europe! These islands are like giant frozen playgrounds, with one island called Severny and the other called Yuzhny.

They are separated by a narrow stretch of water called the Matochkin Strait. It's a land of ice and snow, where polar bears might roam!

A Place with a Secret Past!

A long time ago, during something called the Cold War, Novaya Zemlya was a very secret place. Imagine a giant playground that only a few people were allowed to visit for very important, top-secret reasons. The military used it for airfields, like a special airport for fighter jets.

It was also a place where they tested some of the biggest and most powerful bombs ever made, like a super-duper firework show, but much, much bigger and more dangerous.

The Biggest Bomb Ever!

One of the most amazing and scary things that happened here was testing the Tsar Bomba. This was the biggest and most powerful bomb ever exploded! It was so big, it was like setting off a thousand suns all at once. The explosion was so huge, it could be seen from hundreds of miles away. It's a reminder of how powerful things can be, and why it's important to be careful with such power.

Why We Remember Novaya Zemlya

Even though it's a remote place, Novaya Zemlya is important because it shows us a part of history. It reminds us of a time when countries were very worried about each other and did secret things. It also shows us how powerful science can be, for good or for not-so-good. Today, it's still a place with military bases, reminding us that some places in the world are still very important for defense.
