Key Facts
Where is This Desert Wonder?
Nouakchott is like a special jewel in the big, sandy Sahara Desert. It's the capital city of a country called Mauritania, way over in the corner of Africa. Even though it's in the desert, it's right by the big, blue ocean! This makes it one of the largest cities you can find in the whole Sahara. It's a busy place where lots of people live and work.
From Tiny Village to Big City!
Once upon a time, Nouakchott was just a small village with only a few houses. But then, something amazing happened! In 1958, people decided it would be the perfect capital for Mauritania. They started building, planning for about 15,000 people. But guess what? More and more people came, especially when the land got too dry for farming. The city grew and grew, much bigger than anyone expected!
A City That Never Sleeps (Almost!)
Today, Nouakchott is HUGE! Almost 1.5 million people call it home, which is like filling up a giant stadium over 15,000 times! It's a super important place for Mauritania. It has a big port where ships bring and take things, and a busy airport. It's also where lots of people go to learn new things at the university.
Life in the Sahara's Big City
Living in Nouakchott means you're in a special place where the desert meets the sea. People here work in many different jobs, like running the port, working at the airport, or teaching at schools and the university. It's a place full of energy, where old traditions meet new ways of living. It's a city that keeps growing and changing!
