Key Facts
Meet the Nok People!
Long, long ago, in a land that is now Nigeria in Africa, lived a group of people called the Nok. They were super talented artists, especially with clay! They made incredible sculptures, mostly of human heads. These heads were sometimes as tall as a small person or even bigger than a school bus! They are some of the oldest and most amazing art found in Africa.
Where Did They Live?
The Nok people lived in a place with lots of trees and rivers. They farmed crops like yams and millet to eat. We know about them because archaeologists, who are like treasure hunters for history, found their amazing clay figures buried underground. These figures have been hidden for thousands of years, waiting to be discovered!
Amazing Clay Sculptures!
The most famous thing the Nok people made are their terracotta sculptures. Terracotta is a type of baked clay, like a strong, hard pot. These sculptures often have big, almond-shaped eyes and elaborate hairstyles. Some heads might have been part of bigger statues, but we mostly find the heads today. They are like ancient portraits made of clay!
Why Are They So Cool?
The Nok culture is important because it shows us how creative and skilled people were thousands of years ago. Their art is some of the earliest known in West Africa. It helps us understand what life might have been like back then. These sculptures are like windows into the past, showing us the faces and styles of people who lived so long ago.
