In the runoff election, he faced George Simion, the founder of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and emerged victorious with 53.6% of the vote.

Dan's platform was distinctly pro-Western, advocating for strong ties with European and North American allies. This stance contrasted sharply with his opponent's nationalist and Eurosceptic rhetoric.
