Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne is a super cool city in the north of England, right on the edge of the River Tyne. It's like the northernmost big city in England! If you imagine a map, it's on the northern side of the river, with another town called Gateshead on the southern side. It's a busy place where lots of people live together, making it the biggest town in its whole region.

This city wasn't always called Newcastle. A long, long time ago, it started as a Roman camp. Then, it was called Monkchester. But the most exciting part is when a castle was built there in 1080 by a very important person named Robert Curthose, who was the son of William the Conqueror! Because of this new castle, the town got its new name: Newcastle!

Did you know that Newcastle used to be a super-duper important place for building and fixing big ships? During a time called the Industrial Revolution, it was one of the biggest places in the whole world for this! Imagine hundreds of giant ships being built right there. It was a very busy and noisy place with lots of hard work happening.

Today, Newcastle is a vibrant city with lots of things to see and do. People work in all sorts of jobs, from helping in shops to designing new things.
