Where in the World Are These Islands?

New Hebrides was a name for a bunch of islands way out in the big blue South Pacific Ocean. Think of it like a scattered necklace of islands. These islands are warm and sunny, perfect for growing yummy fruits. They are far away from places like Europe or North America, making them a special, hidden treasure.

A Name from Far, Far Away!

A brave explorer named Captain James Cook sailed his ship all the way to these islands in 1774. He thought they looked a bit like some islands he knew in Scotland, called the Hebrides. So, he decided to call these new islands the New Hebrides! It’s like naming your new toy after your favorite teddy bear.

Living Together, Then Becoming Free!

For a very long time, two countries, Britain and France, helped to look after these islands. It was a bit like having two teachers in charge of the classroom! Then, in 1980, the people living on the islands got to be in charge of themselves. They decided to call their new country Vanuatu, which means 'Our Land'.

What's Special About These Islands?

These islands have a unique story because they were called New Hebrides for a long time. They were a place where different people and cultures came together. Now, as Vanuatu, they are a proud, independent country with their own rules and ways of doing things. It’s a place with a past and a bright future!
