Negative Numbers: The Numbers That Go Down!

You know numbers like 1, 2, 3, right? They tell us how many cookies you have or how tall you are. But what about numbers that go the OTHER way?

That's where negative numbers come in! They are like the opposite of the numbers you know. They have a little minus sign (-) in front of them, like -1, -2, or -3.

They help us count things that are less than zero, like how cold it is outside or if you owe your friend a toy.

Over many, many years, people in different places started to think about what happens when you owe someone something, or when you go below sea level. They realized they needed special numbers to talk about these ideas, and that's how negative numbers slowly became a thing!

Negative numbers might seem a little strange, but they are super useful! Imagine you're playing a game and you lose 5 points. Negative numbers help you keep track of that!

Or, if you're baking and the recipe calls for -2 cups of sugar (that would be weird!), you know it's not a lot. They help us understand things like the weather when it's freezing cold, or how deep a submarine is underwater. Without them, we couldn't talk about owing money or going down below sea level!

Think of a number line. It's a straight line with numbers on it. Zero is right in the middle.

The numbers you know, like 1, 2, 3, go to the right. Negative numbers, like -1, -2, -3, go to the left! They are like a mirror image of the positive numbers.

When you add a negative number, it's like taking away. When you subtract a negative number, it's like adding! It's a bit like a puzzle, but once you get it, it's really cool.
