Key Facts
Your Super Neighbors!
The National Guard is like a special team of helpers for every state in the United States. They are also part of the big U.S. Army and Air Force when needed. Think of them as having two jobs: one as regular people in their towns and another as protectors! They are always ready to jump into action, whether it's helping after a big storm or even going to faraway places to help keep peace.
Guardians from Long Ago!
These amazing protectors have been around for a super long time! Way back when America was just starting, people formed groups to protect their towns. The very first big group like this was in Massachusetts in 1636. That's older than your great-great-great-great-grandparents! Over many years, these groups grew and changed, and eventually, they were called the National Guard.
What Do They Do?
The National Guard does so many cool things! They can help people when there are floods, fires, or other emergencies. They also train to be soldiers and pilots, just like the regular Army and Air Force. Sometimes, they even get to travel to other countries to help with important missions. It's like being a firefighter, a police officer, and a soldier all rolled into one!
Two Kinds of Heroes!
There are two main parts to the National Guard: the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. The Army Guard members are like the ground troops, ready to help on land. The Air Guard members are the pilots and the people who work with planes and fly through the sky! Both teams work together to keep everyone safe.
