Key Facts
Meet the Super-Sized Rock!
Imagine a rock so big it's like a whole mountain! Mount Augustus is a GIANT rock in Western Australia. It's so tall, it's like stacking 200 giraffes on top of each other!
This amazing rock is way, way out in the country, almost as far from Perth as you are from your grandma's house if she lives super far away. It's part of a big park called Mount Augustus National Park, where you can see this amazing natural wonder.
A Rock with a Secret Story
Long, long ago, before anyone built houses or schools, the local people called this rock 'Burringurrah'. They have a special story about a young boy who was turned into the rock! It's a very special and sacred place for them, meaning it's super important and they have to be very respectful.
This rock has been important for thousands and thousands of years, way longer than your grandparents have been alive!
How Big is This Big Rock?
This rock is HUGE! It's like a giant sleeping whale made of stone. It's so wide, it covers an area bigger than 11,000 football fields! And it has a long, bumpy back that's almost 8 kilometers long. That's like running all the way around your school track about 20 times! It stands up really high, about 860 meters above the land around it. That's taller than many tall buildings put together!
What's It Like There?
Mount Augustus is in a very dry place, so it's usually sunny and warm. There aren't many trees right on the rock, but you can find them nearby. It's a quiet place, far away from busy cities. The rock itself looks different colors depending on the time of day, sometimes it's purple, sometimes it's red! It's a special place for nature and for people who have lived there for a very, very long time.
