Meet the Fuzzy Flyers!

Moths are like butterflies' cousins, but they usually sleep during the day and zoom around at night! They have two wings, often covered in tiny, colorful scales that make them look like they're wearing sparkly pajamas. Some moths are tiny, smaller than your fingernail, while others are HUGE, with wingspans as wide as your outstretched arms!

They come in so many different patterns and colors, from plain brown to bright oranges and blues.

Where Do Moths Hang Out?

You can find moths almost everywhere on Earth, from snowy mountains to hot deserts and even in your backyard! They love places with lots of plants because that's where they find their food and safe spots to rest. Many moths like to hide under leaves or in tree bark during the day to stay away from hungry birds.

When night falls, they wake up and flutter around looking for yummy nectar from flowers.

What's for Dinner?

Most moths love to sip sweet liquid called nectar from flowers, just like hummingbirds! They use a long, straw-like tongue called a proboscis to slurp it up. Some moths don't eat at all when they are grown-ups because they have stored up energy from when they were caterpillars.

Baby moths, called caterpillars, are very different! They munch on leaves all day long to grow big and strong before they turn into a moth.

Moth Superpowers!

Did you know some moths can smell a friend from miles away? They use their special antennae, which look like little feathers, to sniff out mates. Other moths have amazing camouflage, meaning they can blend in with trees or leaves so well that you can barely see them!

This helps them hide from animals that want to eat them. Moths are super important because they help flowers make seeds by carrying pollen from one flower to another.
