A Big, Salty Bathtub!

Imagine a giant bathtub that's been filled up for a super, super long time! That's kind of like Mono Lake. It's a big lake in California, but it doesn't have any rivers flowing out of it.

This means all the salty stuff from the ground stays in the water, making it taste like a super salty pretzel! It's so salty and bubbly, it's like a giant soda pop. This special lake is home to tiny brine shrimp that love to swim in the salty water.

Feathered Friends' Favorite Stop!

Mono Lake is like a super busy airport for birds! Every year, about two million birds fly here to rest and eat. They love to gobble up the tiny brine shrimp and little alkali flies that live in the lake.

Some birds fly from very far away, like from the bottom of the world all the way to the top! They need this lake to have enough food to keep flying on their long journeys. It's a very important rest stop for them.

Funny Towers in the Water!

Have you ever seen a castle made of sand? Mono Lake has something like that, but they're made of calcium carbonate, which is like chalk! These funny-looking towers, called 'tufa', pop up out of the water.

They look like spooky fingers reaching out of the lake. They form when salty, underground springs mix with the salty lake water. It's like nature's own weird art project, and it makes Mono Lake look like a magical, alien place!

Saving the Salty Home!

A long time ago, people took water from the rivers that fed Mono Lake to give to a big city. This made the lake level go down, which wasn't good for the birds or the funny tufa towers. But some people who loved Mono Lake got together and told everyone how important it was. They even went to court and won! Now, they make sure the lake gets enough water to stay healthy for all its animal friends.
