A meteorite represents the final stage of a celestial body's journey from outer space to a planetary surface. The object, initially traveling through the vacuum of space, encounters a planet's atmosphere and undergoes a dramatic transformation. Atmospheric entry subjects the object to intense aerodynamic heating due to friction and compression of air.
This process vaporizes much of the original mass, creating a luminous phenomenon known as a meteor, or a 'shooting star.' This granular approach allows for the identification of specific parent bodies and the conditions under which they formed. Meteorites smaller than approximately 1 millimeter in diameter are classified as micrometeorites. While similar in origin, they differ in that they typically melt completely during atmospheric entry, falling as quenched droplets rather than solid fragments.

Meteorites are indispensable tools for planetary science and astrobiology. They serve as tangible records of the primordial solar nebula, offering insights into the physical and chemical conditions present during planet formation. Their study helps us understand the processes of accretion, differentiation, and the early bombardment history of planets.
Furthermore, the discovery of organic molecules, including amino acids, within certain meteorites has profound implications for understanding the origin of life on Earth and the potential for life to arise elsewhere in the universe.
