What's This Special Day All About?

Memorial Day is a very important holiday in the United States. It happens every year on the last Monday of May. On this day, we remember and honor all the amazing men and women who were part of the U.S. military and lost their lives while serving our country.

It's like a big thank you to them for their bravery and sacrifice. Many people visit cemeteries to place flags and flowers on the graves of these heroes.

Where Did This Idea Come From?

A long, long time ago, after a big war called the Civil War, people started decorating the graves of soldiers who had died. It was called Decoration Day back then. One special person, Mary Ann Williams, had the idea to have one special day each year to do this for all the soldiers.

Later, after other big wars, people started remembering all the soldiers who died, not just from the Civil War. So, it grew into the Memorial Day we know today!

Why Do We Decorate Graves?

We decorate the graves with flags and flowers to show respect and to remember the people who gave their lives for our freedom. Imagine putting a bright red flower on a friend's favorite spot to show you miss them. That's kind of what it's like.

Volunteers carefully place American flags on the graves in national cemeteries. It's a way to say, 'We haven't forgotten you, and we are so grateful for everything you did.'

More Than Just a Day Off!

While Memorial Day is a day off from school and work for many, it's much more than just a break. It's the unofficial start of summer, a time for picnics and fun. But it's also a time to pause and think about the brave people who are no longer with us because they were serving our country. It's a day to be thankful for the peace and freedom we have, thanks to their courage.
