Key Facts
Meet Sultan Mehmed V!
Mehmed V was like the captain of a giant ship called the Ottoman Empire, but he was the captain for only a little while, from 1909 to 1918. He was the second-to-last sultan, meaning there was only one more after him! He didn't get to make all the big decisions himself, though.
It was like he was a king in a play where other people were really in charge of the story. He lived in a time when his empire was going through a lot of ups and downs.
A Reign of Ups and Downs
When Mehmed V became sultan, it was after some big events happened. His time as ruler was super busy! There were three times when people tried to take over the government, and four big wars happened.
Imagine your school having eleven different principals in just nine years! That's how many governments changed during his time. There were also lots of people who were unhappy and started protests.
It was a very exciting, but also a bit scary, time for the empire.
Losing Lands and Big Fights
During Mehmed V's rule, the Ottoman Empire lost some of its lands. They lost places in North Africa, like where camels live, and islands in the sea. Then, a huge war called World War I started.
Mehmed V even declared a special kind of war called a 'jihad' against the countries fighting against his empire. His soldiers fought bravely in a famous battle called Gallipoli, and they even captured a big group of British soldiers. But sadly, the empire was losing the war.
A Sultan's Wishes
Even though Mehmed V was the sultan, he didn't always get his way. There was a very sad event called the Armenian genocide, where many people were hurt. The sultan didn't want this to happen, but the people in charge of the government did it anyway. By the time he passed away in 1918, the empire was in a lot of trouble and was close to losing the war. It was a difficult time to be a ruler.
