Key Facts
Meet the Maya!
Long, long ago, in a place called Mesoamerica (that’s like Mexico and Central America today), lived a clever group of people called the Maya. They weren't just one big group, but many cities that were like neighbors. They built huge stone buildings, some as tall as a 10-story building, and loved to learn about the sky and numbers. They were like ancient superheroes of learning and building!
When Did They Live?
The Maya people were around for a super long time! Their amazing cities started to grow about 4,000 years ago, which is older than your grandparents' grandparents' grandparents! They had their best times between 250 and 900 AD, a period called the Classic Period.
That's when they built most of their giant pyramids and fancy palaces. Then, their big cities slowly became less crowded, but Maya people and their traditions are still around today!
Maya's Amazing Superpowers!
The Maya were super smart! They invented their own writing system, like a secret code with pictures and symbols, to write down stories and important dates. They were also amazing at math, even inventing the number zero before many other people in the world!
And guess what? They were incredible astronomers, watching the stars and planets so closely they could predict eclipses. They even had a calendar that was more accurate than some calendars used today!
What Did They Leave Behind?
The Maya left behind incredible ruins of their cities, like Tikal and Chichen Itza, with giant pyramids and temples that still stand today. You can visit these places and imagine what life was like for the Maya. They also left behind amazing art, pottery, and carvings that tell us stories about their lives, their gods, and their beliefs.
These treasures help us understand how they lived and what was important to them.
