Mary Kay Letourneau

Mary Kay Letourneau, born Mary Katherine Schmitz in 1962, embarked on a career path that would ultimately lead to national notoriety. After attending Arizona State University and marrying Steve Letourneau, with whom she had four children, she pursued a teaching degree. In 1989, she began teaching at an elementary school in Burien, Washington.

It was during her tenure as an educator that she first encountered Vili Fualaau, who was a second-grade student in 1991. While she was not his teacher during his sixth-grade year, their paths crossed again in 1995. The subsequent events in June 1996, when Letourneau, then 34, engaged in sexual activity with Fualaau, then 12, constituted statutory rape.
