Marie Popelin

Imagine a world where only some people got to vote or have certain jobs. That's kind of what it was like a long time ago! Marie Popelin was born in Belgium in 1825.

She was a teacher and a writer, and she saw that women didn't have the same rights as men. She thought this wasn't fair at all. So, she decided to do something about it!

She became a leader in a movement to help women get more rights and be treated equally.

Marie Popelin was super smart and believed everyone should have a chance to learn and work. She helped start an organization called the 'Ligue belge du Droit des femmes,' which means the Belgian League for Women's Rights. This group worked hard to tell people why it was important for women to have the same opportunities as men.

They wrote letters, gave speeches, and tried to change the laws. It was like trying to convince everyone on the playground that sharing toys is more fun!

One of Marie's biggest dreams was for women to be able to go to university and become doctors or lawyers. Before her, it was very difficult for women to do that. Marie Popelin worked so hard that she helped make it possible for women to study at the Free University of Brussels.

This was a HUGE step! It meant that women could follow their dreams and become amazing professionals, just like men could. She helped open doors that were once closed.

Marie Popelin passed away in 1913, but her work made a big difference. Because of her and others like her, women in Belgium and many other places now have more rights. They can vote, go to college, and have all sorts of jobs.
