A King's Big Adventure!

Imagine being a prince who never thought he'd be king, but then suddenly, he was! That's what happened to Manuel II. He was born in a fancy palace in Lisbon, Portugal. He loved learning and even went to naval school. But when something very sad happened to his father and older brother, Manuel, who was only 18, became the king. It was a big job for someone so young!

When the Crown Came Off!

Manuel was king for only two years, from 1908 to 1910. During his time, Portugal was going through a lot of changes, like a bumpy roller coaster ride! People wanted a different way to run the country. So, one day, the monarchy, which is when a king or queen rules, ended. Manuel and his family had to pack their bags and move away to a new country, like going on a very long trip.

A Royal Bookworm

Even though he wasn't king anymore, Manuel still loved Portugal. When he lived in a new country called the United Kingdom, he spent his time collecting special books from Portugal. He would buy them at auctions, which are like special sales for old and interesting things. He built a huge library, full of stories and history from his home country. He wanted to keep Portugal's stories alive!

What Was Portugal Like?

Portugal is a country in Europe, on the edge of the big Atlantic Ocean. It has sunny weather and beautiful beaches, perfect for playing! The main language spoken there is Portuguese. Lisbon is its biggest and most important city, where Manuel was born. Even though Manuel had to leave, Portugal is still a wonderful place with lots of history and friendly people.
