Iraq was called 'Mandatory Iraq' because Britain had a 'mandate' or permission from a big international group to guide it.

What Was Mandatory Iraq?

Mandatory Iraq was a time when a country called Iraq was looked after by Great Britain. It started in 1921, after people in Iraq didn't want to be told what to do by Britain. Think of it like a new kid joining a school, and the principal (Britain) helps them get settled.

But the people of Iraq wanted to be in charge of their own school! This special arrangement lasted until 1932, but Britain still had a lot of say.

A King From Far Away!

The British helped a man named Faisal ibn Husayn become the king of Iraq. He was supposed to be king of another place, Syria, but he had to leave. So, the British said, 'How about ruling Iraq instead?' He became king, but the British Royal Air Force still kept a close eye on things, like a watchful teacher. So, while Faisal was king, Britain was still in charge of many important decisions.

People Wanted to Be Free!

Not everyone in Iraq was happy about Britain being in charge. Many people wanted to make their own rules and be independent. They were like kids who want to play their own games without an adult always telling them how. There were even some big protests and disagreements. Britain had to try and keep things calm, but it was tricky because so many people wanted to be in charge of their own country.

Iraq Was Already a Special Place

Even though Britain helped create this 'Mandatory Iraq,' the land itself was already very old and special. It was known as 'the Iraq Region' for a long, long time, even when it was part of a bigger empire called the Ottoman Empire. It was made up of different areas, like Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. So, Iraq wasn't brand new; it was a place with its own history and identity.
