Meet King Louis!

Louis Bonaparte was a real king, but not for long! He was the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, who became a super famous emperor. Louis got to be king of a country called Holland, which is like the Netherlands today. He was called King Louis I. He had to follow his brother's rules, but he tried to be a good king for his people.

A Royal Family Tree!

Louis came from a big family with lots of brothers and sisters. They were all born on an island called Corsica. Louis followed his brothers into the army, and his super famous brother Napoleon helped him out. He even married Hortense, who was like his step-niece! It was a very connected family, like a big, royal team.

King of Holland!

When Napoleon became emperor, he decided to make Louis the king of Holland. But Napoleon wanted Holland to do exactly what he said. Louis, however, wanted to be his own boss and make his own decisions for the Dutch people. He became quite popular because he cared about them, which made his brother Napoleon a little grumpy!

Back to Being a Brother

Because Louis didn't always listen to Napoleon, his brother got very upset. Napoleon decided to take Holland back and make it part of his own big empire. Louis had to stop being king and go live somewhere else. But guess what? His son, Louis-Napoléon, became emperor later and was called Napoleon III!
