London Marathon

Imagine a super-duper long race happening right in the amazing city of London, England! This is the London Marathon, where thousands of people run a very, very long way. It's like running from your house all the way to your grandma's house, and then some! The race starts in a place called Blackheath and finishes near a famous royal road called The Mall. It's a big adventure for everyone involved!

This exciting race didn't always happen. Two friends, Chris Brasher and John Disley, thought it would be a fantastic idea to have a big running party in London back in 1981. They wanted to see if people could run a whole marathon together! Since then, it's become a huge event, usually happening in April, which is springtime when the weather is often nice for running.

The London Marathon isn't just about running fast. It's also about helping people! Many runners wear special costumes or carry collection boxes to raise money for important charities. They've raised over a BILLION pounds since the race began! That's enough money to buy lots and lots of toys or build many new playgrounds. It's a race that makes a real difference!

Some runners are incredibly fast, like superheroes! They are called elite runners. The fastest runners have even set world records during the London Marathon. Imagine running so fast that you're the quickest person in the whole world for that distance! There are also special races for people who use wheelchairs, and they are super speedy too. It’s amazing to watch!
