If the President is sick or needs to take a break, the Vice President steps in to do their important job. They also have a special role in the big meeting place for leaders, called the Rajya Sabha, where they are like the chairperson, making sure everyone talks nicely and gets their turn!

Picking the Second Leader!

How do they choose this important person? It's not like a regular election where everyone votes. Instead, all the leaders in the Parliament, which is like the country's big classroom, get to vote!

They use a special way of voting to make sure it's fair. Once they are chosen, they get to be the Vice President for five whole years! That's longer than you're in kindergarten and first grade combined.

They stay in their job until a new person is ready to take over.

Super Cool Vice Presidents!

Did you know that out of all the Vice Presidents India has had, six of them became President later? That's like winning a race and then getting to be the main star! The very first Vice President was named Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

He was so good at his job that he later became the President too! Sadly, one Vice President, Krishan Kant, was the only one to pass away while still doing his important work.

A Special Birthday!

There have been 15 Vice Presidents since India became a country in 1950. That's a lot of people helping to lead! One Vice President, Venkaiah Naidu, has a really special birthday. He was born after India became an independent country! This means he grew up in a free India and then became one of its top leaders. It shows how much things have changed and how many new leaders have come along.
