Who's the King of Spanish Soccer? The Champions!

Imagine a giant soccer tournament where the best teams in Spain play to be number one! That's La Liga, and the winners get to be called the champions. The very first La Liga championship was in 1929. But before that, there was another way to be the best, like a special cup competition. The league had to stop for a few years because of a big event called the Spanish Civil War, which is sad. But after that, the games started again, and teams kept playing to become the champions. Two teams are like the superheroes of Spanish soccer: Real Madrid and Barcelona! Real Madrid has won the championship a whopping 36 times. That's more than double the number of years you've been alive! Barcelona is also super strong, winning it 28 times. They've even won both the league and the cup in the same year a record nine times. Wow!

To win La Liga, teams play lots and lots of games against each other. It's like a super long race! The team that gets the most points by winning and drawing games at the very end of the season is the champion.

If a team doesn't do so well, they might even have to play in a different league next year. Only three teams have never, ever been sent down to a lower league: Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona, and Real Madrid!
