America's Snowiest Spots!

Imagine snow so deep it covers a school bus! Some places in the United States get a LOT of snow every year. We're talking about mountains where the weather stations are like super snow detectors. These spots are usually high up, where it's cold enough for snow to stick around. Think of fluffy white blankets covering everything, making it look like a winter wonderland all the time!

The champions of snow in the USA are two mountains in Washington state: Mount Rainier and Mount Baker. They get an amazing amount of snow, over 640 inches each year! That's taller than a giraffe! This snow comes from clouds that bump into the tall mountains and drop all their water as snow. It's like the mountains give the clouds a big hug and all the snow falls out.

Did you know that even in the snowiest places, the amount of snow can change a lot? One year, a place called Paradise Ranger Station got almost 1,100 inches of snow – that's like 10 school buses stacked up! But another year, it only got about 260 inches. So, while these places are super snowy, they also have surprising snowy years and less snowy years.

The snow amounts we know about come from special places called official weather stations. These are like the eyes and ears of the weather service, carefully measuring the snow. They are usually found in towns or places where people live. Sometimes, wilder, empty places might get even more snow, but we don't have special snow detectors there to measure it.
