Las Médulas

Las Médulas is a super cool place in Spain that looks like a giant's playground! It's famous for its bright red, bumpy mountains. They built long channels to bring water from faraway rivers. Then, they let the water crash down on the mountains to wash away the dirt and rocks, hoping to find gold!

The Romans used a special trick called 'ruina montium,' which means 'wrecking the mountains.' They used so much water, it was like a giant waterfall! This water would carry away the soil and rocks, leaving behind the heavy gold. This was the biggest gold mine in the whole Roman Empire! It's hard to imagine how much gold they found.

Because Las Médulas is so special and tells such an amazing story about how people lived and worked long ago, it's now protected by a group called UNESCO.
