Meet the Mountain Wreckers!

Have you ever seen a mountain? They are super big! But long ago, people called Romans had a clever way to get gold from inside them.

They called this special trick 'Ruina montium,' which means 'wrecking of mountains' in their language. It was like a secret code for digging deep into the earth to find shiny gold. They didn't use shovels and pickaxes like you might think.

They had a much more surprising method!

How Did They Wreck Mountains?

It sounds like magic, but it was science! The Romans would dig little tunnels, like tiny mouse holes, deep into the mountain. Then, they would fill these tunnels with water.

When the tunnels were full, the water pushed and pushed with a lot of force. This force was so strong it could crack and break apart the thick rock walls inside the mountain. It was like a giant water squeeze that helped them get to the gold!

A Super Dangerous Treasure Hunt!

This way of finding gold was very exciting, but also very dangerous. The people doing the digging had to go deep underground, where it was dark all the time. They used lamps to see, and sometimes they stayed underground for months! The tunnels could be tricky, and sometimes the rock would fall, which was scary. It was much harder and riskier than finding treasure on a pirate map!

Why Was This So Cool?

The Romans were super smart builders and inventors. This 'mountain wrecking' technique shows how clever they were at using nature to help them. They figured out how to use water pressure, which is like the force of water pushing, to do a really tough job. It helped them get lots of gold, which was very important to them for making coins and beautiful things.
