Lagoon

A lagoon is like a calm, shallow swimming pool that nature made! It's a big stretch of water that's separated from the giant ocean by a sandy beach, a line of islands, or even a bumpy coral reef. Think of it like a cozy cove where the waves are much gentler than out in the open sea. They are found all over the world, right along the edges of continents.

Lagoons are like nature's art projects! They form over a very, very long time. Sometimes, waves and currents push sand and shells to build up a long barrier, like a sandy wall, that cuts off a piece of the ocean. Other times, a ring of coral grows and builds up, creating a special kind of lagoon called an atoll. They are always changing, just like a sandcastle on the beach!

Lagoons are like busy nurseries for baby sea creatures! Because the water is shallow and calm, lots of small fish, crabs, and other tiny animals can grow up safely here without big, scary waves or predators.
