Key Facts
Who Were the Kings of Italy?
A 'King of Italy' was a ruler, like a president but with a crown! The first kings appeared after the Roman Empire fell, a super long time ago. They wore special crowns, like the 'Iron Crown of Lombardy,' which was very shiny and important. These kings ruled different parts of Italy over many years, sometimes just the north, and sometimes a bigger area.
When Did They Rule?
The first kings popped up around 400 years after Jesus was born. Then, for a while, there were no kings of all of Italy. But guess what? Napoleon, the famous French leader, was a king of Italy for a bit! Later, in the 1800s, Italy became one country again, and a new King of Italy was crowned. He was the king when Italy became a modern country.
What Was Italy Like Back Then?
Italy wasn't always one big country like it is today. For a long time, it was like a puzzle with many pieces. Different groups of people, like the Lombards and the Franks, ruled different parts. The kings of Italy had to deal with these different groups and make sure everyone followed the rules. It was a busy job!
The Last King!
The very last King of Italy was named Umberto II. He was king for only a short time in the 1900s. After him, the people of Italy voted to have a different kind of government, and Italy became a republic, which means it's run by elected leaders, not a king or queen. So, the time of kings in Italy ended in 1946.
