Its deployment shifted to secondary theaters and specialized roles, such as anti-tank and anti-shipping missions, particularly on the Eastern Front.
However, the lack of a suitable replacement meant production continued until 1944, a testament to its perceived necessity despite its growing obsolescence.
Legacy and Decline
The Junkers Ju 87 served the Luftwaffe from its inception through to the final days of World War II. Approximately 6,000 units were manufactured. Its role evolved from a primary shock weapon to a more niche ground-attack platform.
Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the most successful Stuka pilot and the war's most highly decorated German pilot, embodied the aircraft's potent capabilities, flying over 2,500 missions and claiming numerous victories. By 1945, purpose-built ground-attack variants of fighters like the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 had largely superseded the Stuka.
