John Paul Getty III was the grandson of a super-rich man named J. Paul Getty, who owned a giant oil company. Think of him like the king of oil! John Paul lived in Rome, a city with ancient buildings and yummy pizza. He was a young person, just like you, but his life took a very surprising turn one day.

When John Paul was 16, he was taken by some not-so-nice people called the 'Ndrangheta. They wanted a LOT of money, like enough to buy a whole playground full of toys! His grandpa, the rich oil man, said no at first. But then, something shocking happened: they sent one of John Paul's ears to a newspaper! That made his grandpa change his mind.

John Paul was kept for five whole months! That's longer than summer vacation! Finally, after his grandpa paid some money, he was set free. But the adventure wasn't over. Even though he was safe, the things that happened made him feel very sad and sick later on.

After being rescued, John Paul had a tough time. He got sick and had a stroke, which is like a sudden problem in your brain. This made it hard for him to do many things for the rest of his life. It's a reminder that even when scary things are over, they can still have a big impact.
