John Davis (sealer)

John Davis was a sailor, which means he loved to travel on ships! He was born a long, long time ago in England, but he sailed for America. He was a seal hunter, which meant he looked for seals to catch. Seals are cute, blubbery animals that live in cold places. John Davis sailed his ship to a place so far south, it was like going to the very bottom of a giant map!

There's a big mystery about John Davis! Some people think he was the very first person ever to put his feet on Antarctica. Antarctica is a huge, icy continent, like a giant frozen playground. He might have landed there on February 7, 1821. Before him, other explorers saw Antarctica, but John Davis might have been the first to actually walk on it!

Antarctica is a super cold place, covered in ice and snow, much colder than your freezer! It's so big, it's like having a whole country made of ice. There are no trees or grass, just ice and rocks. It's home to amazing animals like penguins and seals, who are used to the chilly weather. Imagine a land so white and frozen, it sparkles like a giant diamond!
