Jan van Eyck

Imagine a super-smart artist named Jan van Eyck who lived a long, long time ago. He was born around 1380 in a place called Maaseik, which is now in Belgium. Jan was so good at painting that people called him a master! He worked for important people like dukes and even kings. He painted beautiful pictures that still make us say 'Wow!' today.

Jan van Eyck was like a wizard with paint! He was one of the first people to use oil paints in a special way. This made his paintings look super shiny and real, almost like photographs! The colors were so bright, and you could see tiny details, like the threads on clothes or the sparkle in someone's eyes. It was like magic for his time!

Jan painted about 20 pictures that we know are his. One of his most famous works is the Ghent Altarpiece, which is a giant, amazing painting made of many parts. He also loved to paint portraits of people, showing them just as they were. He even signed his name on some paintings with a secret code that meant 'As I can'.

Jan van Eyck changed how people painted forever! Because his oil paintings looked so real and colorful, other artists wanted to paint like him. He helped start a whole new style of art that was super popular. Even though he lived hundreds of years ago, his beautiful paintings are still admired by people all over the world.
