What Was the Irish Free State?

The Irish Free State was like a brand new club that started in 1922. It was a part of the big British Empire, but it got to have its own government and make its own rules for most of Ireland. Think of it like having your own room in a big house, where you get to decide how to decorate it!

It included 26 out of the 32 counties of Ireland. The other six counties decided to do their own thing and stayed separate.

A Big Change for Ireland!

Before the Irish Free State, Ireland was ruled by Britain for a very long time. There was a big fight called the Irish War of Independence. After the fighting stopped, a special agreement was made.

This agreement created the Irish Free State. It was a way for Ireland to become more independent, like a teenager getting more freedom from their parents. The leader of this new state was W.

T. Cosgrave, who became the first Prime Minister.

Making Their Own Laws

In the Irish Free State, there was a parliament called the Oireachtas. It had two parts, like a team with two captains. One part was called Dáil Éireann, and the other was Seanad Éireann.

The people in charge had to promise to be loyal to the King of England, which some people didn't like! This caused some disagreements, but the government that supported the new state had more people on their side.

Becoming Truly Independent!

Over time, the Irish Free State became even more independent. In 1931, a big law was passed that gave Ireland almost all of its power back from Britain. This meant Ireland was recognized around the world as its own country. Later, in 1937, Ireland got a whole new constitution and changed its name to just 'Ireland', showing it was completely in charge of its own destiny.
