Key Facts
Who Are the IRA?
The Irish Republican Army, or IRA, is a name used by different groups in Ireland. These groups believe Ireland should be a completely independent country, not ruled by Britain. They are like a team that wants to make sure Ireland makes its own rules. The original IRA was like the first big team, formed a long time ago from soldiers who wanted Ireland to be free.
Where Did They Come From?
The first IRA started around 1917. It was made up of people who had already been soldiers, like the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army. Some Irishmen who had fought in World War I for Britain also came back to join. They were all working together to fight for Ireland's independence. They were like the official army for a new, free Ireland that people were dreaming of.
Why They Mattered
The IRA fought in a big struggle called the Irish War of Independence. This was a very important time for Ireland. The groups using the IRA name wanted to make sure Ireland was free from British rule.
Over the years, the IRA changed and split into different groups. One of the most well-known was the Provisional IRA, which was active during a difficult time in Northern Ireland called 'the Troubles'.
Different Groups, Same Name
Even today, there are groups that call themselves the IRA. Each group thinks it is the true follower of the original IRA. They all believe they are the only ones who have the right to use the name. It's like having many different clubs that all claim to be the original club from years ago, each with its own ideas about how things should be done.
