Irish Canadians

Irish Canadians are people living in Canada whose families originally came from the beautiful island of Ireland! Imagine a big family tree, and some of the branches reach all the way back to Ireland. These are the roots of Irish Canadians. They are a special part of Canada's big, colorful family.

A very long time ago, many people left Ireland to find new homes in Canada. Between 1825 and 1970, over 1.2 million people made this journey! That's more people than can fit in 12,000 school buses! Many came because of tough times in Ireland, hoping for a better life.

When they arrived, Irish Canadians became a very important group in Canada. By 1867, they were the second biggest group of people, after the French Canadians. They brought their music, their stories, and their hard work to help build towns and cities across Canada.

Did you know that by 1867, Irish Canadians made up almost a quarter of Canada's whole population? That's like having one out of every four friends in your class be of Irish background! Many Irish Canadians today still celebrate their heritage with music and traditions.
