Ion Iliescu

Imagine a person who became a big leader in a country called Romania! Ion Iliescu was an engineer who later became a president. Before Ion Iliescu became president, Romania was led by a different kind of leader. But in 1989, something called the Romanian Revolution happened, and things changed a lot! Ion Iliescu played a big part in this change. He then became the very first president of Romania after these big changes, like being the first student to try a new game at recess!

Ion Iliescu wasn't just president once, he was president two different times! First, he was president from 1990 to 1996. Then, he became president again from 2000 to 2004. It’s like being the class president for a year, then taking a break, and then being elected again for another year!

When Ion Iliescu was president, Romania did something really cool. In 2004, Romania joined a big team of countries called NATO. Think of it like your school joining a sports league with other schools. This meant Romania was part of a group that promised to help each other stay safe.
