Meet the Twin Giants!

High up in Ecuador, there are two super tall mountains called the Illinizas. They stand side-by-side, like twins! The taller one is called Illiniza Sur, which means 'South Illiniza', and it's super, super tall, almost as tall as 10 Eiffel Towers stacked up!

The other one is Illiniza Norte, 'North Illiniza'. They are so big they have their own special park called the Illinizas Ecological Reserve. It's a place where nature is protected, and you can see amazing views!

A Cozy Mountain Home

Between the two giant peaks, there's a special little house called a refuge. It's not fancy, but it has beds for people who want to climb the mountains. To get there, you can drive for a bit and then hike for about three hours, which is like walking to school and back three times!

Inside, there are stoves to cook and beds to sleep in. Climbers bring their own sleeping bags and yummy food, but they can get water from a special spot to boil and drink.

Adventures on the Peaks!

Climbing Illiniza Norte is a bit easier, like a really long hike with some tricky parts. But Illiniza Sur is much harder because it's covered in ice, like a giant ice cream cone! It's so slippery and steep.

Even for Illiniza Norte, it's a good idea to have a guide, like a super-smart friend who knows the way. The path can be hard to find as you get closer to the top, so having a guide is super important to stay safe.

What's in a Name?

Did you know the name 'Illinizas' has a special meaning? It comes from old words that mean 'masculine hill.' It's like the mountains are strong and powerful! Long ago, people tried to climb these mountains, but it was very difficult.

Two brave climbers named Jean-Antoine Carrel and Louis Carrel were the first to reach the top of Illiniza Sur in 1880. Later, in 1912, two other adventurers named Nicolás Martínez and Alejandro Villavicencio climbed Illiniza Norte!
