Meet Dr. Semmelweis, the Mother's Hero!
Imagine a time when many new moms got very sick after having a baby. It was a scary time! But a doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis had a brilliant idea.
He noticed that when doctors washed their hands, fewer mothers got sick. He was so sure about this that people called him the 'saviour of mothers.' He was born in Hungary, a country in Europe, a long, long time ago, in 1818. Even though his idea was simple, it made a HUGE difference!
The Mystery of the Sick Mothers
Dr. Semmelweis worked in a hospital where many mothers were getting sick with something called childbed fever. It was like a super bad flu that only new moms got.
He saw that the mothers cared for by doctors got sick much more often than those cared for by midwives. This made him think hard! He realized that maybe the doctors were carrying something yucky on their hands from one patient to another.
It was like a secret germ that made people sick.
The Magic of Clean Hands!
So, Dr. Semmelweis decided to try something new. He told all the doctors to wash their hands with a special cleaning solution before seeing any patients.
And guess what? It worked like magic! The number of mothers getting sick dropped from a super high number, like 18 out of 100, down to less than 2 out of 100.
That's a massive change! It was like going from a scary rollercoaster to a gentle swing. His idea was simple but powerful.
Why We Still Remember Dr. Semmelweis
Even though Dr. Semmelweis's idea was amazing, some other doctors didn't believe him at first. They thought he was silly!
But later, other scientists proved he was right. Today, washing our hands is something we do all the time, especially before eating or after playing. It's one of the most important ways to stay healthy.
Dr. Semmelweis showed us how a simple act of cleanliness can be a lifesaver for everyone!
