Helen Keller was born a long, long time ago in a sunny town in Alabama. When she was only a baby, she got very sick and lost her sight and hearing. This meant she couldn't see the world around her or hear her mom and dad.
It was like living in a quiet, dark room all the time! For a while, she only knew how to make her own special signs to talk to her family. But Helen was a super curious kid and wanted to learn more!

When Helen was seven, a wonderful teacher named Anne Sullivan came to live with her. Anne was like a superhero for Helen! She taught Helen how to understand words by spelling them out with her fingers into Helen's hand.
