Key Facts
Who Was President Truman?
Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States. He was born way back on May 8, 1884, in Missouri.
Imagine a time before cars were everywhere or even before airplanes! He became president in 1945 after the previous president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, sadly passed away.
Truman had to make some really big decisions for the country, like helping rebuild Europe after a huge war and making sure America was safe.
From Farm Boy to President!
Harry grew up on a farm and loved to read books. When he was a soldier in World War I, he was a captain! After the war, he tried running a store that sold shirts and ties, but it didn't do very well. Then, he decided to go into politics! He worked his way up, becoming a judge and then a senator before becoming vice president. It was a long journey to the top job!
Big Decisions, Big Changes!
President Truman had to deal with a lot! He helped create a plan to rebuild countries in Europe that were damaged by World War II. He also helped start NATO, which is like a team of countries that promise to protect each other. He even had to make the tough choice to use a new, powerful kind of bomb to help end the war. These actions helped shape the world we live in today.
A President Who Listened
Even though he was president, Truman wanted everyone to be treated fairly. He ordered that the U.S. Army should not have separate groups for different races. He believed in fairness for all Americans. He also loved music and played the piano! When he left the White House, he went back home and wrote books about his time as president.
