Harry Crerar

Imagine a super-important leader for Canada's army! That was Harry Crerar. He was a brave soldier who became the top boss of the Canadian Army during a big war called World War II. He started as a young soldier and worked his way up to become a full general, which is like the highest rank you can get! He was in charge of lots of soldiers fighting far away from Canada.

Harry Crerar went to a special school for soldiers called the Royal Military College. After school, he became a lieutenant, which is a junior officer. He even fought in another big war before World War II! He was so good that he got special awards. After that war, he decided to stay in the army and kept learning how to be an even better leader.

During World War II, Harry Crerar was in charge of the First Canadian Army. This army was HUGE and had soldiers from Canada, but also from places like Britain, Poland, and even a country called Czechoslovakia! They fought in tough battles in places like France and the Netherlands, helping to free those countries. He was the first Canadian to become a full general while fighting in a war!

After the war ended, Harry Crerar retired from being a soldier. But people remember him as a super important person in Canadian history. One historian said he had the biggest impact on Canada's army during the war. He helped build it, fight with it, and then say goodbye to it. He was truly one of Canada's greatest soldiers!
