What's a Guinea Pig Anyway?

Guinea pigs are small, furry pets that love to snuggle and play! They are not actually pigs and they don't come from Guinea. They are rodents, like mice and rats, but much friendlier!

They have round bodies, short legs, and no tail. Their ears can be floppy or stand up, and their fur comes in all sorts of colors and patterns. They love to munch on hay, veggies, and special guinea pig food.

They are super social and love to live with other guinea pigs!

Where Did These Cuddlers Come From?

Long, long ago, guinea pigs lived in the wild in the Andes Mountains of South America. Imagine them scurrying around in grassy fields! People there started to keep them as pets and even as food over 5,000 years ago.

Eventually, explorers took them to other parts of the world, and now they are loved by families everywhere. They are much smaller than a big farm pig, about the size of a loaf of bread!

Guinea Pig Superpowers!

Guinea pigs have amazing ways to talk to each other. They make lots of different sounds! A happy guinea pig might 'wheek' loudly when they see their owner or smell yummy food.

They might also 'purr' when they are feeling relaxed and content. If they are scared or upset, they might 'chatter' their teeth. They also have strong teeth that grow all the time, so they need to chew on things to keep them short, just like your fingernails grow!

Why Guinea Pigs are the Best!

Guinea pigs are wonderful pets because they are gentle and easy to care for. They don't need a lot of space, and they are fun to watch as they explore and play. They can live for about 5 to 7 years, which is a good long time to be friends. They are also very clean animals. When you have a guinea pig, you get a furry friend who can bring lots of joy and fun into your home!
