Key Facts

Scientific Name
Chlorophyta.
Habitat
Freshwater, saltwater, and moist land environments worldwide.
What They Eat
They make their own food using sunlight (photosynthesis).
Fun Fact
Green algae are the ancestors of all land plants!

Meet the Green Gang!

Green algae are super tiny, like microscopic specks, but there are TONS of them! They are like the smallest plants you can imagine, but they live in water instead of gardens. They come in all sorts of shapes, some look like tiny threads, others like little balls. They are found almost everywhere there's water, from puddles to giant oceans!

Where Do They Hang Out?

These green pals love to swim! You can find them in almost any watery place. They live in fresh water like lakes, rivers, and even puddles. They also love salty ocean water, floating near the top where the sun shines. Some even like to grow on damp soil or tree bark where it's wet. They are true water babies!

Green Algae's Superpower: Making Food!

Green algae have a superpower called photosynthesis. It's like they have tiny solar panels! They use sunlight, water, and air (carbon dioxide) to make their own yummy food. This is super important because, as a bonus, they release oxygen, which is the air we need to breathe! So, they feed themselves and help us too!

Why Are They So Cool?

Green algae are like the base of a giant food chain in the water. Little fish and other sea creatures munch on them to get energy. Plus, remember that oxygen superpower? All that oxygen they make helps keep our planet healthy. They are small, but they do BIG jobs for Earth!
