The Great Chicago Fire
Key Facts
Where the Big Fire Happened!
Chicago is a super big city in a state called Illinois, way up north in the United States. It's right next to a giant lake called Lake Michigan. This city was built with lots of wooden houses and buildings, which made it easy for fires to spread super fast. The fire started on a windy, dry day, and it just kept going and going!
When the Flames Danced!
This big fire happened a super long time ago, from October 8th to October 10th in 1871. That's even before your grandparents were born! For three whole days, the fire roared through the city. It was so hot and windy that the flames jumped over rivers, like a giant leap over a puddle, and gobbled up whole neighborhoods.
What the Fire Left Behind!
When the fire finally stopped, it was like a giant eraser had wiped away a huge part of Chicago. Over 17,000 buildings were gone! Imagine losing your whole school and all the houses on your street. More than 100,000 people lost their homes, which is more people than can fit in a giant sports stadium. Sadly, about 300 people also lost their lives.
Building Back Bigger and Better!
Even though the fire was scary, the people of Chicago were super brave! They didn't give up. They started rebuilding their city right away. They made new rules so buildings would be safer and wouldn't catch fire so easily. Soon, Chicago was back, stronger and even more amazing than before!
