General Post Office, Sydney

Key Facts
Sydney's Stone Giant!
Right in the middle of Sydney, on a street called Martin Place, stands a super old and very grand building called the General Post Office, or GPO for short! It's made of special stone called sandstone, which is a bit like really hard, colorful rocks. This building is so big, it stretches as long as a football field!
It’s a famous landmark, which means lots of people know it and think it’s important.
A Building with a Big Job!
This amazing building wasn't always just for looking at. A long, long time ago, it was the main place where all the letters and packages for Sydney were sorted and sent out. Think of it like the super-duper headquarters for all the mail carriers! It was built a very long time ago, starting way back in 1866. That's even before your grandparents were born!
Built to Last!
The GPO is made from local sandstone, which is like Sydney's own special building blocks. It's so strong and beautiful that people say it's the best example of a fancy building style called Victorian Italian Renaissance in the whole state of New South Wales! It's so wide, it's one of the biggest sandstone buildings in all of Sydney. It’s a true testament to the builders of the past.
Still Important Today!
Even though it's super old, the GPO is still a very important place. While it's not the main mail sorting center anymore, you can still go there to send and receive mail at the Post Shop. The outside of the building looks almost exactly the same as it did when it was first built, which is pretty amazing! It’s protected so everyone can enjoy its beauty for years to come.
