Gendarme (mountaineering)

Have you ever seen a tall, skinny tower of rock sticking out of the ground? Well, on top of mountains, there are special rock towers called gendarmes! They are like pointy hats that mountains wear. These rock towers are usually found on the very top of a mountain ridge, which is like the spine of the mountain. They are a cool part of the rocky landscape you see in high mountains.

These rock towers didn't just pop up! They are formed over a very, very long time. Imagine giant rivers of ice, called glaciers, slowly moving down the mountains. Where two of these icy rivers met, the rock there didn't get worn away as much. So, the harder rock was left standing tall, like a little monument. It’s like when you build a sandcastle and some parts stay strong while others wash away.

The name 'gendarme' is a bit of a funny story! Long ago, people in a place called the French Alps looked at these tall rock pillars and thought they looked like the police officers of that time. These police were called 'gendarmes.' So, they named the rock towers after them because they stood up straight and tall, just like a policeman on duty!

Gendarmes are super interesting because they show us how mountains change over time. They are a special kind of rock formation that makes mountain climbing exciting. Climbers can even try to climb these rock towers! They are a reminder that nature is always busy shaping the world around us, making cool shapes like these rocky giants.
