Gannet

Gannets are big, beautiful seabirds that love the ocean! They are mostly white with cool black tips on their wings and a yellowish head. Imagine a big, fluffy cloud with wings! They are related to boobies, but they are much bigger. In Scotland, people sometimes call them 'solan geese' because they look a bit like geese but live by the sea.

Gannets are amazing at catching fish. They fly high above the water, spot a tasty fish, and then dive down like a torpedo! They tuck in their wings and plunge into the sea, sometimes from as high as a tall building. This helps them catch speedy fish. They can dive really deep to get their food. It’s like a super-fast waterslide into the ocean!

You can find gannets in the chilly waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. The Northern Gannet is the biggest seabird in this area. They also live in the cooler seas around the southern parts of Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They build big nests together in noisy colonies on cliffs and islands, where they raise their fluffy chicks.

Northern gannets are HUGE seabirds! Their wings can stretch out as wide as two meters, which is about as wide as a small car is long. That’s a really big wingspan for a bird! They are strong flyers and can travel long distances over the ocean looking for food. Their size helps them catch big fish and makes them impressive to watch.
