Key Facts
Who Were the Thousand?
Once upon a time, Italy wasn't one big country. It was many smaller kingdoms. In 1860, a super brave leader named Giuseppe Garibaldi gathered about 1,000 volunteers.
They were like a special team ready for an adventure! They hopped on ships and sailed off to try and unite Italy, which was a really big dream back then. It was like a daring mission to make one big happy family out of many small ones.
Sailing to Sicily!
Garibaldi and his team, called the 'Thousand,' set sail from a place called Quarto al Mare. Their destination was Sicily, an island in the south of Italy. They landed in a town called Marsala. Their goal was to take over the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which was ruled by a different king. It was a risky journey, like trying to sneak into a castle, but they were determined to make Italy one!
Winning Big Battles!
When the Thousand arrived in Sicily, they got help from more people who also wanted Italy to be united. Their team grew bigger and stronger! They fought some exciting battles against the king's army and, guess what? They won! They were able to take over the whole Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was like winning a huge game, and it helped make Italy a single country.
